Mother Rosalie Cadron-Jette

Pope Francis advanced the sainthood causes of 13 candidates, including the the Canadian founder of the religious order that founded Edmonton's Misericordia Hospital.

During a meeting Dec. 9 meeting with Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes, the pope signed a decree recognizing that Mother Rosalie Cadron-Jette lived the Christian virtues in a heroic way and is venerable.

Mother Cadron-Jette, who was born in Lavaltrie, Quebec, in 1794, and died in Montreal in 1864, was a midwife who founded the Sisters of Misericorde.

The order was originally dedicated to helping unwed mothers.

The sisters founded Edmonton's Misericordia Hospital in 1900 and ran the institution until the 1970s.

The verification of a miracle attributed to Mother Cadron-Jette's intercession is needed for her beatification and another miracle for her to be canonized as a saint.
