EDMONTON - Covenant Health hospitals have already faced patients who tell them "I want to die."

The ailing clients ask the doctor to give them drugs so they can commit suicide

As a Catholic hospital committed to giving quality ethical care the doctor will not do this.

"But we do not abandon them," assures Self. "We cannot just walk away."

What does happen, is medical staff talk with the patient and try to find out what their major concern is. Is it pain management? Do they feel like a burden?

Whatever their needs are, the Covenant staff meets them, said Self. "They get good quality care and they settle right down."
