Re: Chris Miller’s article Mary’s Assumption is the real deal (WCR Aug. 27).

The article about the Skaro pilgrimage was an interesting piece that we enjoyed reading. We were a bit disappointed, however, with the mention of Father Philip Ruh (b. Roux, according to the Canadian Encyclopedia, but changed the spelling of his name in the early 1920s “to make it more in keeping with his adopted culture”).

The statement: “The grotto was designed by Father Phillip Roux, a Greek Catholic Oblate who served the region” fell short of giving him the recognition he earned. (That would be Ukrainian Greek Catholic, incidentally.)

Father Ruh was a talented architect who was responsible for the design and construction of numerous Ukrainian Catholic churches that still dot the Canadian prairies and Ontario.

“At least 40 of the buildings across Western Canada remain as his legacy,” notes the encyclopedia. One is St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Edmonton.
