Pakistan gov't demolishes Church-run centre

January 23, 2012

The Catholic Church's National Commission for Justice and Peace condemned demolition of a Church centre on a prime property in Lahore and its annexation by the Pakistan government.

"This is illegal grabbing of the Church land by the government," Father Emmanuel Yousaf Mani, commission director, told Catholic News Service Jan. 10.

The commission said bulldozers destroyed buildings on the two-acre plot.

The compound hosted a shelter for the homeless, a vocational school for girls, a convent and a chapel.
