EDMONTON - It was a spectacular day in Rundle Park, Edmonton AB on April 24, 2010. The fifth annual Faith, Fitness & Fun 5 km Run/Walk was supported with outstanding enthusiasm.

There were 244 runners and walkers (the highest number of participants ever), many volunteers and a number of folks "behind the scenes" cooperating and engaging their friends and family to raise funds for St. Joseph Seminary and Newman Theological College.

We began with faith. Archbishop Richard Smith addressed the group, commended their commitment and then sprinkled holy water over the walkers and runners before they were sent on their way.

Next came the fitness.

Kristopher Schmidt, a seminarian for the Edmonton Archdiocese, led the stretching exercise and warm-up activities before the race. Linebacker Tim St. Pierre of the Edmonton Eskimos was our celebrity starter, and made sure he met everyone there.

Our runners and walkers completed the five-km course through Rundle Park at times between 18 minutes, 30 seconds and one hour and five minutes, monitored by our team of volunteers who encouraged them along their journey.

The whole day was filled with fun. There was face painting, lots of prizes, hot dogs, home baked cookies, granola bars, apples, bananas, juice, cool water and smiles galore.

Some of our participants came from great distances - from as far as Amersfoort, Netherlands. We are pleased to report that we have had folks from Regina, Okotoks, Calgary, Gibbons, Grande Cache, Wildwood, Leduc, Ponoka, Bruderheim, Fort Saskatchewan, Morinville, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Edmonton.

Top fundraisers included Annette Marie Williams, Richard Rajotte, Gene Mudry, the St. Thomas More Catholic Women's League, Connie McBride, Glen Argan, Amber Mercier, the Nguyens, Johnnie DesRochers and the Henderson Family.

Preliminary count has our gross total raised as $22,700. Thanks to all our sponsors, participants and donors.

The 2010 Faith, Fitness & Fun committee consisted of: Clinton Sopchyshyn, chair; Father Stephen Hero, Josée Marr, Ruth Groves, Richard Rajotte, Tracey Harrison and Roxanne Werbicki.
