CWL prepares for 2012 national convention in Edmonton

OLDS - While it's more than two years away, fundraising and planning has already begun in earnest for the 2012 national CWL convention in Edmonton. The convention will mark the centennial of the launching of the Catholic Women's League in Edmonton. More than 1,000 league members from across Canada are expected at the convention to be held at the Shaw Conference Centre, Aug. 12-15, 2012. Archdiocesan CWL President June Fuller said it will be an honour to host the event. Mary Lou Veeken, a past president of the archdiocesan CWL, said the league has asked several of its life members to prepare a 100th anniversary archive display for the convention. "We are possibly arranging for a CWL history display to be featured at the Provincial Archives of Alberta sometime in 2012. By this fall, the life members will be asking councils for information and artifacts," Veeken said. Organizers are asking for a CWL contribution of $2 per member per year for three years. Already $19,000 has been raised with slightly more than half of CWL councils contributing. "We are hoping that the 30 or so councils that have not yet contributed will remember this project in their annual or semiannual donations," said Veeken. CWL luggage tags and four-gigabyte memory sticks are also being sold as a fundraiser. The CWL national convention was last held in Edmonton in 1995. |
