Basilian steered me to my life's vocation

TERRY KEHOE

In memory, the jump from elementary school to high school was huge. In reality, it was the advancement from a child's perspective to that of a young adult entering the world of education and opportunity.

High school was like entering the real world. It commenced in Grade 9, and along with my classmates we were introduced to the Basilian Fathers. The year, 1942; the high school, St. Mary's Boys, Calgary.

Each of our classes was conducted by a Basilian Father who quickly became not only a personality and a teacher, but a friend, and in some cases a feared controller who effectively kept us in our place. Much needed for a school full of exuberant teen boys.

In their development as students, many boys struggled for identity, understanding and indeed their futures. The Basilian Fathers were there not only as teachers but to mould and assist us on our journey.

One priest, Father Daniel Vincent Burns, started me on my career. Father Burns was my homeroom teacher and art instructor. He recognized my interest in art and advised that a career in this subject was possible. After I graduated from high school he encouraged art college attendance.

With his advice and encouragement a three-year term was completed which then presented an entrance to the business world. My career involved art and design which in turn led to marketing, sales, management and manufacturing.

In retirement I enjoy painting as a hobby, teaching art, and continue to honour and thank Father Burns for commencing a vocation path leading to a challenging and rewarding career.
