WCR achieves financial surplus . . . but at a cost
The Western Catholic Reporter again rang up a surplus in its fiscal year that ended March 31 - this time for $39,256.
That surplus, however, gives an overly rosy picture of our financial situation. We were short-staffed for most of the fiscal year. Not only did we not have to meet a full payroll for more than 10 months, but we also produced smaller newspapers than we otherwise might have.
The WCR's editorial accomplishments continued to be acknowledged with awards, both nationally and internationally. We feel that even on that score, however, we would have done better if the newspaper had been fully staffed.
In the meantime, the cost of printing the newspaper took a significant increase and we face the prospect of regular hikes in our mailing costs that are larger than increases in the cost of living.
If we had been fully staffed for last year, we might well have had a small deficit.
We are budgeting to break even this year and working toward achieving that end.
We count on the support of the parishes in the Edmonton Archdiocese, which are assessed based on their ability to pay. In return, parishioners are provided with a weekly source of Catholic news and education.
Many of those who receive and read the WCR are not weekly Church attenders and the newspaper provides their most regular contact with the life of the Catholic community.
Advertising is another major source of revenue for the WCR. Not only does that advertising provide more than $300,000 of income per year, but it is also an efficient and effective way for Church-related organizations to reach the Catholic population.
Outside the Edmonton Archdiocese, a few thousand people also find the WCR an important Church media. The cost of a WCR subscription - currently $30 a year in Canada - is low compared to the value of receiving a quality Catholic publication 44 times a year.
The donations that our readers make during our annual appeal have been crucial to giving the newspaper a solid financial base. We recognize that Catholics in the archdiocese already contribute to the support of the WCR by donating to their parishes.
We encourage you to support your parish financially as best you can. If you are also able to support the WCR directly by sending a donation in the envelope provided with this issue, that too is greatly appreciated.
