EDMONTON - When one door closes, another opens. Ron Krausert knows that well. The part-time evangelist, author and musician spent several months selling a faith-filled children's book and a CD to raise funds for Radway's John Paul II Bible School, which he attended in 1987.
But then in May the school announced it is closing, ending abruptly Krausert's project. As he was about to wrap things up, someone else came knocking.
Now Krausert, 50, is selling his book and CD to help out Catholic Renewal Services, the charismatic organization behind the Bible school for the past 25 years.
"I heard from a member of the board of Catholic Renewal Services that they are tight financially, that they need money," he said.
Krausert had many CDs and books left, so he decided to help. "It was a logical step," he said. "(After all) Catholic Renewal Services is a very alive Catholic group that encourages people to live their faith."
He is now planning to approach schools and parishes about his book and CD but hopes to do the majority of the sales through his website.
So far Krausert, an advertising consultant with Edmonton's Senior newspaper, has sold $3,500 worth of books and CDs, out of which he gave $1,500 to John Paul II Bible School; the remainder went to cover costs. Krausert spent more than $3,000 of his own money to self-publish the book.
Krausert's illustrated book, Finding God, contains 15 short stories, some of which he used to tell his own children. They are simple enough for children, yet deep enough for adults. Two of them are true literally, 13 are parables.
STORIES OF HEALING
"They range from telling how a lukewarm Catholic - searching for answers about whether or not God is real, does love him and is proud of him - discovers these answers, to how he finds more healing, peace and other treasures for his life, plus the promise of heaven!" Krausert's website says about the book.
Basilian Father Clair Watrin, former Bible school chaplain, recommends the book, which he found to be in accord with the teachings of the Catholic Church. "The book is inspirational in nature and suitable for both youth and adults," he says.
The CD, Worship Given to God: There is Nothing More Beautiful, is a collection of music and songs that glorify God.
Named in honour of the pope and of Archbishop Richard Smith's evangelization campaign, the album features songs by Krausert as well as other composers.
Krausert, a father of two teenage children, is a member of the Knights of Columbus and a reader at Holy Family Parish in St. Albert. On weekdays, he plays the piano during the midday Mass at St. Benedict Chapel in downtown Edmonton.
