Supreme knight sees fundamental threat to all rights
CANADIAN CATHOLIC NEWS
OTTAWA — Denying the right to life to society’s weakest members – unborn children – is undermining the foundation of all human rights, says the head of the Knights of Columbus.
“A society that chooses death as a solution to society’s problems will find that it has chosen the final solution for its democratic institutions,” Supreme Knight Carl Anderson told Canada’s National March for Life May 14.
“Legalized abortion threatens our entire culture of human rights,” Anderson said.
He noted that both Canada and the United States have abortion rates that are almost twice as high as those in several European countries.
WOMEN AND CHILDREN
A culture committed to a culture of human rights and the dignity of women and children would try to bring down the number of abortions, he said. The value of choice has become far more important than “making the right choice.”
He urged making the choice more and more rare.
“Let’s make abortion the choice that no one chooses,” he said. “We can do that by providing loving care for the baby in the womb and the mother in need.”
Anderson called on those present to help the agencies that help pregnant women and to present adoption as an option.
He asked those to help crisis pregnancy centres obtain ultrasound machines to help women “see the new human being God has entrusted to them.”
When a pregnant woman is given the opportunity to see the reality of the infant growing in her womb, three out of four change their mind, refuse to have abortions and carry the child to term, he said. “That is what having an informed choice really means.”
