EDMONTON — The Knights of Columbus of Alberta/Northwest Territories are calling on all Albertans to take part in the annual March for Life through the streets of Edmonton May 7.
This is the second year this annual remembrance of life and protest against abortion has been held in the city. The Knights decided to get involved in promoting the event this year “basically because we support the Church’s stance on life,” says Lou Normand, the Knights’ state church director. “And we want to make sure we get a lot of people out for this march.”
Normand, who represents the Knights on the committee that organizes the march, does public relations and tries to find financial support for the march. Expenses surrounding last year’s march were close to $5,000.
MASS AT THE BASILICA
Prior to the march, there will be a 10:30 a.m. Pro-Life Mass at St. Joseph’s Basilica. Archbishop Richard Smith and other Alberta bishops will preside at the Mass.
Everyone will walk from the basilica to the legislature grounds for a 1 p.m. rally with various speakers, including Calgary Bishop Fred Henry and Bishop David Motiuk of the Ukrainian Eparchy.
The march begins at 1:30 p.m. on the steps of the Legislature. After walking through downtown Edmonton, marchers will return to the legislature grounds for concluding talks and prayer.
“We had 400 people (marching) last year, but this year we would like it to be three times as many (people),” Normand said.
The archbishop is also calling on Christians to march for life.
“I invite you to join with me and the other bishops of Alberta on May 7 of this year for a peaceful march in defence of the beautiful gift of human life,” Smith says in a recent letter.
“In our country, we are witnesses to the sad truth that human dignity is not always honoured,” he says.
“The obvious and most tragic example of this is abortion. It is manifest also in embryonic stem cell research, which destroys a human embryo, and in the promotion of euthanasia and assisted suicide. These practices call us to speak out clearly in defence of life.”
Donations to finance the cost of the march can be sent to the Alberta March for Life Association, Box 3637, Station A, Sherwood Park T8H 2T4.
Chairperson of the association is Sister Elizabeth Coulombe.
