Stamp based on Toronto chèche

CANADIAN CATHOLIC NEWS

OTTAWA — Canada Post’s Christmas stamp The Nativity, picturing the Baby Jesus watched over by a prayerful Virgin Mary, seeks to carry on “sacred tradition” of trying to capture the Christmas story.

Designed by Toronto graphic artist Joe Gault, the 52 cent stamp’s design was inspired by the collection of crèches at the Anglican Cathedral Church of St. James in that city.

Gault studied the cathedral’s collection, one of the largest in Canada, and came across the works of sculptor Antonio Caruso.

According to Canada Post, Gault found his inspiration in the series of miniature wood prototypes Caruso had made for a crèche he was carving.

“I was fascinated with the phenomenal detail that went into these two-inch sculptures.”
