Forgotten babies and the beauty of a mother’s love are honoured in a memorial to the unborn that was blessed in the courtyard of Good Shepherd Church Sept. 14.

The Virgin Mary tenderly embraces the child Jesus in the statue that calls parishioners to remember all those souls who were never allowed to enjoy life in its fullest.

The inscription, Mary, Mother of Life, Pray for Us, honours the babies whose lives have been violently terminated.

The statue will be a visible reminder signifying a powerful statement we believe: that every life is precious, that every child should have the right to be born.

Pallotine Father George Neumann, Good Shepherd’s pastor, blessed the bronze statue following the noon Mass.

Pope Benedict recently reminded us of the immeasurable value of each person.

“We are not some casual and meaningless product of evolution. Each one of us is a result of a thought of God. Each one of us is willed, each one of us is loved, each of us is necessary,” the pope said.

Parishioners have been contributing money since March. Ten per cent of the donations have been passed on to local pro-life charities.

The Memorial to the Unborn was a parish project. The Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Women’s League and the parish youth group all played roles in bringing the project to fruition.
