Turcotte renounces Order of Canada

By Catholic News Service
Ste.-Anne-De-Beaupre, Quebec

Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte of Montreal announced he was handing back his 1996 Order of Canada medal to protest the federal government’s decision to give the same award to abortionist Henry Morgentaler.

“I renounce the honour of the Order of Canada awarded to me,” Turcotte, flanked by the bishops of Quebec, told a Sept. 11 press conference. ”My conscience obliges me to reaffirm my convictions regarding respect for life from conception until death.”

“Until now, I believed that the Order of Canada was awarded to people in the presence of a positive consensus about their achievements,” Turcotte said.

Turcotte joins other Catholic luminaries, including the Madonna House Apostolate, Father Lucien Larre, and the former lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick, Gilbert Finn, in renouncing the Order of Canada because of Morgentaler’s appointment.
