These murals are part of a series of three large murals unveiled June 20 at St. Angela's School in honour of special-needs teacher Ed Carson who died May 29 at age 49 following a battle with cancer.
The murals are a representation of the legacy initiated by Carson, who taught at St. Angela for 12 years and took personal time to work with disadvantaged children in various Third World countries, including Nicaragua.
The Peace Mural on the front of the school, left, is a reminder of our call to be instruments of peace in the world and was completed by Carson with help from the students. The other two murals, which run along the roof of the school (29 metres long by 4 metres tall), were painted by volunteers from Change for Children with previous instructions from Carson who was a longtime member of the organization.
As well as depicting empowerment through literacy, the murals are the result of a response from the global community to St. Angela School's efforts to promote peace.
