WCR board approves mission, policy statements

The WCR's board of directors approved a new mission statement and policy statements at its June 5 meeting.

The mission and policy statements grew out of a board retreat held in February and discussions held since then.

The mission statement, replacing one approved in 1992, states: The mission of the Western Catholic Reporter is to serve our readers by bringing the Gospel to bear on current issues in the Church and in secular culture through accurate news coverage and reflective commentary.

The four policy statements defined by the board are:

1. The WCR adheres to high journalistic standards.
2. The WCR celebrates the richness of Catholic teaching, educates readers in the faith and supports the process of evangelization in the Edmonton Archdiocese.
3. The WCR encourages dialogue from a Catholic perspective on issues of concern to Church and society.
4. The WCR strives to engage the interest of the broad spectrum of its readers and highlight the good news as it is being lived throughout the Archdiocese of Edmonton.
