St. Matthew's Parish celebrated its 40th anniversary on Monday, April 7. The parish gathered on Sunday, April 6 for celebrations at the Victoria Soccer Club.

There were approximately 260 people in attendance and it was a lovely afternoon of memories. On display were various archival documents from the parish's early days including the first parish council members, the first bulletin, the Catholic Women's League and the church building plans.

Past priests and parish staff were in attendance and Archbishop Richard Smith took part in the festivities with words of thanks and appreciation for the parishioners of St. Matthew's.

Father Leo Hofmann, St. Matthew's current pastor, spoke about his time in the parish and how he's seen the parish grow since becoming pastor.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary, a fund has been established to refurbish and install stained glass windows in the front foyer of the church.

St. Matthew's Parish was opened and blessed on April 3, 1968. St. Matthew's has undergone a number of renovations over the years.

St. Matthew's parishioners are extremely active with 31 different ministries and parish groups, including CWL, two councils of the Knights of Columbus and a youth group.

The parish currently has 1,400 registered families and serves 10 Catholic schools in northeast Edmonton.
