Former teacher marks 80 years in religious life

On Easter Sunday, Sister Mary Ell celebrated her 80th anniversary of religious life at St. Vincent's motherhouse in Saint John, N.B.
Originally from Holdfast, Sask., she entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception in Saint John on March 23, 1928.
For more than 50 years, she taught in western Canada, including 30 years at St. Alphonsus School in Edmonton (1933-63). She also taught in Wetaskiwin, Vancouver and Burnaby, B.C.; and Winnipeg.
After her teaching career, she retired in Edmonton, where she served at St. Alphonsus Parish and tutored at Edmonton's Learning Centre. She returned to Saint John in 2004.
Sister Mary continues to tutor international students and remains active with her religious community and associates. Enjoying the computer and email, she stays in touch with family and friends.
