Mittens for the inner city poor

- WCR photo by Ramon Gonzalez

Grade 11 student Sandra Williams, 16, sews a mitten for the poor during fashion class Dec. 6 at Edmonton's Austin O'Brien High School. With polar fleece and fabric donated by a parent, the Grade 11 and 12 Fashion students made 25 sets of warm mittens and scarves for the Mustard Seed, an inner city church that caters to the needy.

Williams made three sets of mittens "because I care about the less fortunate and I want them to be warm." The goods were delivered Dec. 7. Teacher Tamara Luchak said the 16 students in her fashion class initiated the project as a way to give back to the community and to help the less fortunate who might not have warm clothing at this time of year. The students chose the Mustard Seed because they have worked with the agency in the past. Luchak said the sewing for the poor project might become an annual event.
