Last Updated: Friday - 09/24/2010Week of July 23, 2007Quebec missionary heads Malawi dioceseA Quebec-born priest ordained to the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) has become bishop of the Lilongwe Diocese in Malawi. Bishop R‚mi Sainte-Marie had been serving as coadjutor bishop in Lilongwe since 2006. He assumed his new role July 4, when Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of his predecessor Bishop Felix Eugenio Mkhori, who had reached the age of 75. Born in 1938 in La Minerve, Saint-Marie joined the White Fathers in 1962 and was ordained priest the following year. He has served as a missionary in Malawi for 44 years. Saint-Marie is one of 11 Canadians serving as bishops outside of Canada. |
