CWL addresses environmental sustainability, voluntary simplicity

Corpus Christi was truly the theme for the St. Michael-Resurrection Catholic Women's League Communion breakfast held Sunday, June 10 at the Woodvale Community Club in Millwoods.

President Charissa MacKay welcomed 45 ladies who met to honour God, country, and their creative and productive membership.

Maria Kruszewski, as guest speaker, provided the group with a presentation on voluntary simplicity which confronted the group with questions.

"Do I need it? Or do I want it?"

This self-examination is needed to survive in our consumer culture.

Individual actions

The themes of environmental sustainability, beauty, spirituality, individual responsibility and development, participation, interdependence, self-reliance, equity, non-violence and mindfulness were examined and laid out as a challenge to the group and their sphere of influence in family and friends.

Mitzi Crowe was honoured for an outstanding 50 years of service to the CWL as a member, president at the council, regional and provincial levels.

President MacKay presented her with a lifetime membership and gifts on behalf of the council. Mitzi commended her peers of 50 years for their work and generosity in the CWL. She also noted that her dedication to "voluntary simplicity" led her to wear a long-cherished dress for the occasion.

Members acknowledged

MacKay acknowledged Marie Tumbach, past-president, who was instrumental in reviving this CWL council in 2002 along with Virginia Lukay, Dot Keates and the support of Mary Kuchinsky and Maxine Budinsky.
