Archbishop Richard Smith will be formally installed as Edmonton's eighth bishop at St. Joseph's Basilica on Tuesday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m.
But Smith officially became archbishop of Edmonton April 18 when he was still in Pembroke, Ont. He took canonical possession of the archdiocese that day from Msgr. John Hamilton who has been administrator since Jan. 26.
Archbishop Luigi Ventura, the papal nuncio, will lead the formal installation ceremony at the start of the May 1 Mass. Smith will be presented with his crozier, the symbol of his episcopal power, and be led to the cathedra.
Smith will celebrate the Mass, assisted by Archbishops Ventura, Thomas Collins and Joseph MacNeil and Bishops Fred Henry of Calgary and Luc Bouchard of St. Paul.
