Basilian Father Lawrence Moran, a long-time teacher at St. Mary's High School, died Jan. 2. He was a week short of his 87th birthday.
A native of Trochu, Moran graduated from St. Mary's in 1937 and entered the seminary of the Basilian Fathers.
After his ordination in 1946, he returned to the school and taught physics and religion for 30 years. He also coached the school football team to several city championships.
But Moran felt a call to serve the poorest of the poor. He learned Spanish and spent the next 23 years serving in missions in Mexico and Colombia.
He often hosted groups of students and teachers who visited Mexico seeking to learn about the life of the poor.
"You are not coming to feel sorry for the poor but to appreciate how happy they are with so little," Moran would tell them.
A funeral was held Jan. 5 at St. Thomas More Church in Calgary. Moran was buried at the Catholic cemetery in Trochu.
