Friars' Night raises funds to help seminary, priests

Every year since they were established in 1970, the Friars of Edmonton have hosted an extravagant fundraiser to support Newman Theological College and the education of future priests for the Ukrainian Eparchy.

Nearly a million dollars has been handed over by the Friars to the two dioceses.

It's a black-tie event that generally brings out many of the city's who's who. But more importantly, it is an opportunity to enhance the local Catholic community, says Msgr. Jack Hamilton.

Priests' education

"I remember when it started and over the years, they have given a considerable amount of money to the (St. Joseph) seminary. It was not just for the building, but for the education of the priests," said Hamilton, administrator of the Edmonton Archdiocese.

"The Friars have been a great blessing."

"The Friars have been a marvellous enterprise for the Church in Western Canada."

This year's Friars' Night will be held Friday, May 4 at the Westin Hotel. The goal for the evening is to exceed last year's total of nearly $80,000. Of that amount, 75 per cent is given to Newman while 25 per cent goes to the eparchy.

Show of support

The Friars hope the evening will encourage new friendships and show priests and young men contemplating the priesthood that they are a group concerned for their commitment.

Father Bill Hupalo, administrator of the eparchy, says it is important for the men to know this support is available to them.

"They pay a pretty good price for the tickets. It's a sign that they are caring of the Church," said Hupalo.

He says it can be a long haul for the men studying for the priesthood. "We have to support the Friars for their efforts to help vocations. It is encouraging for someone entering the priesthood, to know there are so many people backing them."

Hamilton says the evening is a terrific way to celebrate the Catholicity of the community. He has attended a number of the events. He said they are always enjoyable.

"It's a fun evening and for a good cause. The Friars have been a great blessing," he said. "I encourage people to come out."
