Vatican Christmas appeal saves those with HIV/AIDS
Foundation sends free medicine to the world's poorest
By CAROL GLATZ
"There are many people abandoned and without anyone to help them."
- Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan
The cardinal said people's contributions have borne immediate fruit in saving lives.
He said one Catholic health clinic in Ghana had been seeing 22 of its patients die from AIDS every month, but after it started receiving funding and was able to buy antiretroviral drugs, the number of patients dying decreased to two per month.
"Thanks to the help of many good people we were able to save 20 people each month," said the cardinal.
