Students fund wells in India
Special to the WCR Edmonton
Over the course of the last school year, the students of cole Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc have undertaken several projects in order to collect sufficient funds to have wells dug in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India.
The project is under the supervision of SOPAR, a Canadian organization that has overseen such projects for the last 29 years. The total cost to dig a well is $750.
Through various projects such as the school-wide recycling project, bake sales, bottle drives and personal fundraising projects, the students raised sufficient funds to have six wells dug this spring.
Thanks to their valiant efforts, 1,800 inhabitants now have access to clean drinking water in their home town.
A special celebration was held recently to unveil the six memorial plaques and to thank all those who contributed to this special humanitarian aid project.
