Knights win praise for casino cutbacks

"Gambling reflects neither Gospel values nor Christian inspiration."
- Alberta bishops
In their letter, the bishops reiterated their teaching from their 1998 pastoral letter, The False Eden of Gambling: "Gambling reflects neither Gospel values nor Christian inspiration as too many marriages and families have been hurt or destroyed by the practice."
Society's attitudes towards gambling are changing rapidly and a "culture of gambling" has risen out of the emergence of casinos and the lure of easy money, the bishops said.
"Casinos tend to cannibalize local economies, prompting job losses in other sectors and inhibiting economic development by redirecting discretionary spending away from established businesses, traditional charities and alternative forms of entertainment."
The bishops urged the Knights "to be salt and light in our society" and to risk trying new solutions.
