Ernest Chauvet honoured
JPII Bible School founder garners Kevin Carr Christian Leadership Award
Special to the WCR
Ernest Chauvet, founder of John Paul II Bible School, has been named the 2005 receipient of Newman Theological College's Kevin Carr Christian Leadership Award.
The award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding example of leadership within the Christian community.
Chauvet's many accomplishments are seen throughout the community.
He founded the John Paul II Bible School in Radway in 1984. His inspiration was fuelled by his commitment to Catholic evangelization.
Since then, hundreds of people have graduated from the Bible school's nine-month residential faith formation program.
A former teacher and principal, Chauvet, helped to open French-language schools in Alberta, as well as French immigration centres in Edmonton and Calgary in his role as president of the French Canadian Association of Alberta.
He has reached out to the youth of the Church, encouraging them to follow the journey of God. In 1987, Chauvet founded the Canadian Foundation for the Love of Children, which runs Kids Cottage.
He also began a "ministry for the elderly," bringing joy and peace to senior citizens.
Chauvet's perspective, leadership and spirituality have proven to be an influential force in the Christian community as a whole.
"Mr. Chauvet is a man with a huge heart," said Joel Lavoie, executive director of the Association Canadienne-Francaise de l'Alberta.
John Connelly, associate director of John Paul II Bible School, characterizes Chauvet's ministry in a quote from Pope John Paul II: "In openness and dialogue, we find God's presence."
Currently living in Legal with his family, Chauvet recently retired from eight years as director of the JPII Bible School and is taking up fulltime graduate studies at Newman College.
The Kevin Carr Christian Leadership Award will be presented to Mr. Chauvet at a luncheon in his honour Wednesday, Oct. 5 at the Edmonton Petroleum Club. Tickets are available from Lynn at 447-2993.
