WCR journalist wins K of C award
WCR reporter Bill Glen has won a prestigious journalism award from the Knights of Columbus.
Glen received the Father Michael J. McGivney Award for Distinguished Volunteer Journalism from the Knights for a front page May 2004 article entitled, "Teen Invigorated by Work with Third World Poor."
The article told the story of Anne Senez, then 18, and how her life had been changed by a trip to the Dominican Republic two years earlier.
At the time of the story, Senez was fundraising for projects in the Dominican Republic, working one evening a week at a l'Arche home for the mentally handicapped, volunteering regularly at Edmonton's Marian Centre, and holding down a part-time job at Boston Pizza.
Senez also served on her school grad committee, served as a Eucharistic minister in her parish, sponsored a teenaged catechumen in the RCIA and maintained a Grade 12 average of more than 90 per cent.
It is the second year the Knights have given the award. Last year, Ramon Gonzalez, the WCR's senior reporter, took second place in the competition.
This year's competition drew entries from 67 publications from across North America.
