More than 6,200 Canadian youth book WYD tickets
By DEBORAH GYAPONG Canadian Catholic News Ottawa
More than 6,200 Canadian youth are heading to World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne, Germany, Aug. 15-21, along with almost 30 Canadian bishops, including all three cardinals.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) reports that the number of youth is up 50 per cent over attendance figures from Canada for WYD 2000 in Rome.
A Canadian seminarian who has been organizing catechetical instruction says the young pilgrims should expect to encounter Jesus Christ and prepare to meet him.
"The goal of the pilgrimage is to draw young people into the message of the Beatitudes," Glenn McDonald said, noting the walkway will be lined with passages from the Bible and quotations from the patron saints of WYD and Pope John Paul II.
Father Tom Rosica, who was national director and CEO of WYD 2002 in Toronto, has worked closely with the German team to ensure a smooth transition.
Now president and CEO of Salt and Light TV, Rosica is finalizing television coverage arrangements. Salt and Light will be sharing a platform with the French CBC (Radio Canada) and EWTN. "The English side (of CBC) hasn't decided yet," Rosica said July 12. "I'm encouraging them strongly."
