SoulFire Youth mixes faith and fun
Special to the WCR
SoulFire Youth, operating out of Good Shepherd Parish in the west end, have been growing in faith together and having fun in the process.
Among other things, the youth recently completed an all-day scavenger hunt collecting such things as charity items for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and a picture with the mayor of Edmonton, all while carrying around a 17-pound "team watermelon."
"We try to run a well-rounded program," Peggy Zallas, the youth ministry coordinator said, "including faith nights, fun nights, and volunteering events. It is important to sometimes just have fun with youth of the same faith."
Lots to do
The youth of Good Shepherd Parish have volunteered at the Mustard Seed Church, watched movies together, worked on a devotional study, and have even had their own all weekend retreat this year.
"(It) makes it possible for me to meet new friends who really care and don't think you're crazy if you pray or if you think you can pray and have fun at the same time" says Corrina Walsh a junior high school youth member.
One other youth participant said, "it strengthen(s) me to live on."
Several junior and senior high members attend the various events, as well as many university students and adults who volunteer to help coordinate, run and supervise events.
"The parishioners have been extremely open to helping in this ministry," Peggy said. "They have always stepped up to the plate and volunteered whenever I have needed help with anything."
Kasia Stasieczek, one active volunteer who recently completed university and is now a Grade 1 teacher, said that it is "a great way for young people to get involved in their faith."
In addition to the many events that they run, SoulFire Youth is having its major annual fundraiser on April 23 where the youth members will act out a murder mystery and serve a full meal to the guests.
In turn, the guests must try to figure out who the "murderer" is by the end of the night.
