Local priests sweep hard, hard
By AL COSH Special to the WCR
A group of local priests temporarily traded in their homilies to shout "Sweep! Sweep! Hard! Hard! Whoa! Whoa!" during the 27th Friars' Briar held at the Shamrock Curling Club in Edmonton.
The local team was led by skip Father Patrick Baska (pastor at St. Alphonsus), third Father Paul Moret (archdiocesan vocations director), second Father Martin Carroll (pastor at St. Theresa) and lead Father Leo Floyd (chaplain at Cross Cancer Institute). The spare was Father Jim Corrigan (associate pastor at St. Theresa) who filled in as necessary.
These enthusiastic rock throwers were ceded into the Melchior event in the round robin portion of the competition and finished with a one win, five loss record. They then were placed into the Limbo event for the playoffs and finished in seventh place.
The Canadian Clergy Curling Association has been holding the mixed bonspiels since 1978, usually in conjunction with The Brier. Every year between 80 and 100 retired and serving clergymen and women from across Canada gather to compete and socialize.
A number of parishioners were on hand to witness the team's performance, applaud their priests, and enjoy the event and fellowship of the 88 curlers who participated.
