Religious practice less important to Canadians

By Canadian Catholic News
Ottawa

The number of Canadians who believe religious practice is important in their moral and ethical lives has dropped sharply since 1980, according to a poll by the Centre for Research Information in Canada.

The survey results released Sept. 9 show that 61 per cent of Canadians believe religious practice is important in their lives but 36 per cent say it is not important.

In an Environics Focus Canada poll conducted in April 1980, 79 per cent of Canadians said religious practice is important to them, while only 20 per cent said it was not important.

At 76 per cent, religious practice was most important to Atlantic Canadians while Quebecers, at 44 per cent, were much less likely to say it was important, the survey showed.
