Last Updated: Friday - 09/24/2010Week of September 20, 2004WCR slips into the red due to Welcome Home edition
The Western Catholic Reporter slipped out of the black and into red ink in its latest fiscal year for the first time in several years. The reason? The WCR spent $82,656 on distributing its special Welcome Home edition to homes across the archdiocese last October.
The WCR printed and distributed more than 500,000 copies of the special edition in a special outreach to active Catholics, those who have withdrawn from full participation in Catholic faith and members of other churches and faiths. Despite our deficit of $734, our revenue was up in most areas as were expenses. The area of greatest concern in our expenditures currently is the increase in postal rates. While the cost of first-class mail has remained quite stable in recent years, the cost of publication mail has grown rapidly. In January we received an 11 per cent increase on the cost of mailing the newspaper. We have tried to counter this by increasing our individual subscription rate for the first time in several years and also by increasing advertising rates. Because of our surplus position in recent years, we asked the archdiocese to freeze the level of cost of the parish coverage plan effective Jan. 1, 2004. Again in 2005, no parish will pay more than the 2003 assessment. The effect of the freeze is barely noticeable in the 2004 financial report since our fiscal year ends March 31. Under the parish coverage plan every parish is to pay five per cent of its ordinary revenues to the WCR and all registered parishioners in that parish are to receive the WCR. The amount charged to the parish does not depend on the number of parishioners who receive the newspaper.
Our forecast for the current fiscal year is for general stability and a small surplus. We appreciate any donations you might give in the envelope provided with this issue. Those donations help us to provide the best quality newspaper we can. - Glen Argan |
