Abortions up in Canada
By ART BABYCH Canadian Catholic News Ottawa
The number of "therapeutic" abortions in Canada rose by almost 1,000 in 2001 with British Columbia at 13.6 per cent showing the largest increase in abortions that year.
However, Statistics Canada said B.C.'s increase was a result of an "improvement in coverage." A facility that provides abortions in B.C. had not previously participated in the Therapeutic Abortion Survey, but submitted counts for the first time in 2001.
Only Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Yukon and Nunavut showed a drop in induced abortions in 2001.
Canadian women obtained 106,418 abortions in 2001, almost one-per cent higher than the 105,427 abortions in the previous year.
The data reveal that induced abortions continue to be the most common among women in their 20s, who accounted for 51 per cent of all women who obtained an abortion in 2001. "On average, 27 women out of every 1,000 in their 20s obtained an abortion," said Statistics Canada.
