Deacon program may expand

Archbishop Thomas Collins told the archdiocese's pastoral council Feb. 7 that the inaugural permanent diaconate program has received some 25 to 30 applications.
Using several models from other dioceses in Canada, the local program will commence this fall with at least 15 applicants. The archbishop hinted that there may be even more men selected for the 40-weekend program.
"There is a richness of material we can adapt to our own specific needs," he said.
"As the years go on, we can fine tune it."
The archbishop said the program will have an intake of new applicants every two years.
