Last Updated: Friday - 09/24/2010Week of September 29, 2003The Archdiocese's Open House is coming to your mailboxIn less than two weeks, the Western Catholic Reporter will undertake perhaps the largest project in its history. It will deliver a special "Open House" edition of the WCR to every home within the boundaries of the Edmonton Archdiocese. More than 500,000 homes - Catholic and non-Catholic - will receive a special 12-page issue of the WCR. We want to let the wider population of central Alberta know more about the Catholic Church. Maybe, this effort will spark or reignite the light of faith in the hearts of some. For sure, it will give people a fuller understanding of who we are and what we do. The WCR board of directors has discussed this issue for the last year and a half. And it has received input from parishes and priests across the archdiocese. The issue contains an introductory letter from Archbishop Thomas Collins as well as an article reflecting briefly on the life of Jesus and another on how Jesus' life bridged the gap between God and humanity. It contains stories about how lay people live out their faith, about a priest and a seminarian and about women religious. There is a story about the many types of parishes in the archdiocese. Another article tells about the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults which every year helps hundreds of people become Catholics. Yet another story tells how young people were affected by their involvement in World Youth Day last year in Toronto. One feature briefly describes the Church's marriage annulment process. Archbishop Collins has also written an article about his monthly Lectio Divina prayer session at St. Joseph's Basilica. One page outlines the services provided by more than 25 organizations and institutions associated with the archdiocese. And there is a list of Sunday Mass times at every parish in the archdiocese. If you live in the archdiocese, you should receive a copy of the WCR's Open House edition by mid-October. We hope you read it and talk about it with any of your friends and relatives who may have questions. We hope you welcome any new faces who may come to your church in the weeks following the issue. And, above all, we ask that you pray that this issue be successful in the way that God wants it to succeed. - Glen Argan |
