Youth ministry seminar draws from across Canada
By MICHAEL PERRAS Special to the WCR Regina
During the week of Aug. 17-23, the John Paul II Centre in Regina was full of life as 36 participants in the Western Canadian Association of Catholic Youth Ministers (WCACYM) summer seminar came to expand their knowledge of youth ministry.
"This was an incredible Spirit-filled experience. Whether in meals together, performing skits, learning from instructors, exploring Regina or worshipping together, Christ was our focus," said Gerard McLarney of Edmonton.
"I am very appreciative of all the new insights, skills, ideas, friendships and faith I have acquired by attending this week," added Natalie Drapal of Calgary.
"I loved the morning prayer services, they made us cry and laugh, it really got all of us rejuvenated, ready to take on the day!" exclaimed Roberta Chartrand.
The 36 participants were from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, Ontario and Nova Scotia.
The summer seminar provides the opportunity to grow in knowledge of the eight components of youth ministry (three components were presented this year) and work towards obtaining a certificate in youth ministry studies.
This year the participants were in the capable hands of Gertrude Rompe, Father Leo English and Anne Walsh. This trio of facilitators kept the participants on their toes with a variety of discussions, presentations, skits, reflections and challenging projects.
"Those who came to the course were keen participants who brought with them enthusiasm, passion and love for God, for life and for youth ministry. They came with an open heart and open mind to receive the gifts that these courses have to offer, not only for youth ministry but for life in general," said Jacinthe Green, co-administrator with Odile Wilson for the week.
The passion was obvious in any activity or event, the sharing of meals and of prayer and Mass.
"There is no better place than WCACYM summer seminar to learn about your ministry and your faith," said Chartrand.
