Coalition holds rally against gay marriage
By BILL GLEN WCR Staff Writer Edmonton
Hoping to spread its displeasure of federal government plans to allow same-sex marriages, the Better Canada Coalition is staging its third of three rallies Sept. 21 on the north steps of the Alberta Legislature.
Hundreds of concerned citizens attended the two previous gatherings and committee spokesman Marshall Deslauriers says the aim of the upcoming event is to help inform a more varied audience about what he considers a morally appalling proposal.
"Toward the end of June, I was told there wouldn't be anything formed in public opposition because it was the start of summer holidays," Deslauriers said.
"We want the public to stand in opposition of this legislation."
The coalition was created when Deslauriers and four others decided the moment was critical to protect not only the traditions of marriage, but how children might be forced to accept the changes.
"It would be an evolving legal agenda," he said. "This will filter down to young children in schools. They'll call it 'alternate lifestyles.'
"We aren't doing this for the provincial government. The rallies are for traditional family values of the Canadian people," he said.
The multi-denominational event will have Catholic, Muslim and Sikh speakers. The rally begins at 3 p.m.
