Students from Sturgeon Heights School, a public school in Sturgeon School Division, walked away with the top prizes in a poster contest sponsored by Holy Family Parish in St. Albert.
The poster contest was organized by the Social Action Committee of Holy Family Parish and encouraged students to create a poster based on the theme The Earth is For All - Not For Sale. Students in Grades l, 3, 4, 5 and 6 in the religious instruction program at Sturgeon Heights School all participated in the contest.
"We were very surprised to be awarded first, second and third place in all the grade levels we entered," said Gerry Schick, school principal.
Responding to the wishes of the community, Sturgeon Heights School has offered a Catholic based religious instruction program for many years. Currently, just over half of the 230 primary and elementary students are enrolled in this option. In addition to providing religious instruction, the school also holds inter-denominational activities throughout the year.
