Endowment fund honours Delaquis

Special to the WCR
Gravelbourg, Sask.

One hundred people from the former Diocese of Gravelbourg gathered at Our Lady of Assumption Co-Cathedral in Gravelbourg Oct. 12 to pay tribute to Bishop Noël Delaquis.

Concelebrating with Delaquis at the Mass in his honour were Archbishop Peter Mallon of Regina and Archbishop Thomas Collins of Edmonton.

Following the celebration of the Eucharist was a banquet at College Mathieu to "kick off" the Msgr. No‰l Delaquis Endowment Fund for St. Joseph Seminary. Located in Edmonton, the seminary trains and educates many of the priests for dioceses in Western Canada and in Newfoundland.

Delaquis had just turned 39 years of age when he became bishop of Gravelbourg in 1974. He continued to minister to the people of the Gravelbourg Diocese until 1995.

At the time of his nomination as bishop, he was the chancellor of the Archdiocese of St. Boniface. From 1997 to 1999, Delaquis served as a member of the formation team at St. Joseph Seminary.

The endowment fund creates a lasting legacy in honour of the bishop. The principal from the endowment fund remains in perpetuity, with only the interest being used annually.

At the bishop's direction, the interest will support St. Joseph Seminary. Because principal from the endowment fund is not used, the fund will support the training and education of priests for today and for generations to come.

Donations to the fund are welcomed.
