Archbishop Meagher announces he may have cancer
By ART BABYCH Canadian Catholic News Cornwall, Ont.
Archbishop Anthony Meagher of Kingston, the chair of the World Youth Day 2002 committee of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, appeared distressed as he gave his report at the bishops' annual assembly in Cornwall, Ont., Oct. 18.
He later stunned the prelates with the news that he had just learned he may have a serious form of cancer.
Meagher, who was to have hosted the bishops during a tour and Mass in Kingston on Sunday Oct. 20, said he felt he owed it to the bishops to explain why he had arrived a day late for the meetings in Cornwall and why he was departing early.
"I've been taking tests for the last three weeks and last night the doctor told me I have a growth in my kidney and what looks like a tumor in the bone of my rib," he said, adding that there is a "high probability" that it is cancer.
"I'm on standby for going to the hospital," Meagher said. "I would appreciate your prayers." The archbishop then left the room to a standing ovation from his fellow bishops and plenary guests.
