St. Sophia Ukrainian Catholic Parish officially named
By Special to the WCR WCR Staff Writer Sherwood Park
The Sherwood Park Ukrainian Catholic Parish, which has been operating since April of this year, has officially named their parish St. Sophia Ukrainian Catholic Parish.
Over a six week period, the parishioners, the students and teachers of the Ukrainian Bilingual Program, were asked to submit their suggestions to Father Myron Pyszcz, the parish pastor. There were nine names that were placed on the final list.
To the delight of the congregation, St. Sophia was chosen.
The name Sophia stands for "wisdom", which, say parishoners, is constantly needed in starting a new parish and also is taught within the framework of the Ukrainian Bilingual Program in Sherwood Park.
Also it is a family-oriented parish. St. Sophia and her three daughters who died for their faith, represent the importance of family, and the importance of standing up for one's beliefs.
This is the only parish in Canada named after St. Sophia.
