Jean Vanier speaks here May 16-19
WCR Staff Edmonton
Jean Vanier, the founder of L'Arche, is coming to Edmonton to give public talks at the U of A's Butterdome and at a retreat for the young people on May 16 and May 17-19, respectively.
A noted speaker and writer, Vanier will talk about "Searching for Hope."
In one of his letters to L'Arche communities he said, "Young people are often so taken up with all that is exciting, they have difficulty seeing how much our world needs to recover what is essential: committed relationships, openness and the acceptance of weakness, a life of friendship and solidarity."
Organizers in Edmonton are expecting between 4,000 to 5,000 people to attend the public talk at the Butterdome, while 240 participants will be accommodated for the retreat at Lister Hall residences.
Retreat participants will spend time with other young people and the people from L'Arche. In between talks, participants will have a chance to reflect both alone and in groups, participate in worship and music and enjoy a fiesta.
Vanier has created homes for people who would not otherwise have the experience of a home. He involves young people in exploring their spirituality, their relationship with God and the world around them.
"Faith is seeing the beauty in people as Jesus did. This requires transformation of the heart, and the weaker, more fragile persons transform us when we welcome them into the community," said Vanier.
