World Youth Day manual selling well
Special to the WCR Toronto
Tens of thousands of young people around the world are using a recently-published manual to spiritually prepare themselves for World Youth Day 2002 in Toronto.
Salt and Light: Preparing for World Youth Day 2002 has just exceeded sales of 10,000 copies worldwide. The combined sales of the French and English versions are nearing 20,000.
When Novalis released Salt and Light in late November, Cardinal Francis Stafford, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, hailed it as "an extraordinary book."
He said he wished a similar book had been prepared when he was archbishop of Denver for World Youth Day 1993.
The book includes eight "paths" - such as discipleship, the moral life, the sacraments and prayer, and justice for the poor - that are to facilitate group reflection and discussion.
To date, Novalis has sold translation rights to Salt and Light to publishers in Japan and Italy. Talks are pending with publishers in Spain, Mexico, Germany and Brazil.
Currently, more than 100,000 people have registered for World Youth Day, July 23-28 in Toronto. Organizers expect that half a million youth will participate, making the event the largest in Canadian history.
