CCODP seeks $9M in Share Lent
Special to the WCR Toronto
The Canadian Catholic Organization For Development and Peace (CCODP) launched Share Lent 2002 Feb. 13, its national campaign that runs from Ash Wednesday to Solidarity Day, Sunday, March 17.
The campaign raises awareness of the causes of poverty and oppression, and funds people-centred development programs in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The Share Lent 2002 goal is $9 million. Share Lent raised $8.6 million last year.
Through Share Lent, private donations and funds from the Canadian International Development Agency, CCODP supports local, regional and national programs in Third World countries in education and community development; human rights advocacy; community media and communications; agriculture and economic activities, such as women's credit unions and co-operatives.
Canadian fiddling sensation Natalie MacMaster supports Share Lent 2002. MacMaster, who was named entertainer of the year at the East Coast Music Awards earlier this month, publicly supports Share Lent and Development and Peace.
"I grew up with the Share Lent campaign, and I remember as a kid contributing coins and change," says MacMaster, who has visited Development and Peace projects in El Salvador. "I always feel that I've been given so much in life. Now I'd like to be able to give back a little."
