Archdiocese enters world of cyberspace
WESTERN CATHOLIC REPORTER
EDMONTON — Edmonton Archdiocese has just joined the cyber world when it launched its website, Nov. 27.
St. Paul used papyrus to proclaim the message in his time. Now we have to use the web, said Archbishop Thomas Collins in a simple launching at the Catholic Pastoral Centre.
"The message is the same but we use different methods now," Collins said.
The archdiocese's website will provide detailed information about parishes and many other Church organizations that provide services to 300,000 Catholics and other residents of central Alberta.
More than a year in development, the website will provide times of Masses and other celebrations in the parishes, plus parish and diocesan events.
Steve Kress of Interbaun Communications, the company that designed the website, told the WCR that it wasn't a typical project timewise.
"We wanted to make sure that the contents and the things that we're doing were exactly what (the archdiocese) wants."
What's special about this website is that we're taking something that's been around for thousands of years and we're exposing it through a new media, said Kress.
"It's giving the youth and others who love to surf the net a new conduit for information to find out about this faith."
The archbishop's schedule every month is included in the site, which helps people in planning to make an appointment with him.
The archdiocese's commissions are outlined on the site including descriptions of the ministries they provide.
As well as the addresses of the different parishes in the archdiocese, contacts for information about other dioceses in Alberta are provided in the site.
What's New section of the website will allow people to be up to date with what's going on in the archdiocese.
The site is date specific which means that information can be placed and be made available on a date that it's needed to be published.
The chancery office can enter information without going through the person controlling the server simply by logging on to a site which Interbaun provided.
The website can be visited at www.caedn.ca.
