All Saints Party draws a host of saints
TRACY JACKNIFE
SPECIAL TO THE WCR ELIZABETH SETTLEMENT — St. Marguerite d'Youville Parish at Elizabeth Settlement (30 km south of Cold Lake) hosted its annual All Saints Party with well over 100 "saints" in attendance. Six years ago the parish felt called to provide an alternative to Halloween and decided to celebrate Oct. 31 with Mass followed by a children's All Saints Party. The event brings the parish together in prayer against the evil influences active on Halloween. It also provides a safe, fun party for the children celebrating their Catholic heritage. The evening begins with Mass and all the children come dressed as their favourite saint, angel or other holy person. The party includes carnival type games such as: Pin the Cross on the Saint, Halo Toss and Penny Toss with prizes consisting of holy cards and medals that parishioners donate. The grand finale is when children break open piņatas. Each family is encouraged to bring a pumpkin carved with Christian symbols. These have turned out to be beautiful works of art featuring the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a chalice and host, Noah's Ark and many other unique carvings. Before the party, the lights are dimmed and everyone lights their pumpkin and reflects how when Jesus comes into our hearts his light can shine through just as the candle shines through the pumpkin. The event has grown in popularity and more parents bring their children to the Mass and party instead of trick or treating. We praise the Lord that our Catholic Church provides such wonderful feasts for her children. All the angels and saints, pray for us! |
