Ward 4 — Central EdmontonJoe Filewych
Joe Filewych, a retired school principal and teacher, will be a candidate for Catholic school trustee in Ward 4. Filewych has served with the Edmonton Catholic School board for 35 years and has a master of education degree. His many years of experience within the Catholic school community make him an excellent candidate. Filewych and his wife Gloria have three children: Terence, Lorne and Laura. Each of their children have successfully completed their education with Edmonton Catholic Schools in the Ukrainian bilingual program. Filewych believes that the Catholic school system should continue to inspire students through its dedicated teachers, who teach academic excellence and faith development. Filewych states, "It takes a whole community to educate a child." He supports the creation of positive learning environments, within which teachers and parents develop collaborative relationships. He also believes that community parishes should work cooperatively to strengthen faith development within schools. Filewych's platform also includes the belief that each student has a right to be safe and respected in the school. He believes that each student should have the opportunity to develop their abilities and talents to their potential through a curriculum specific to their needs. Students should also have the opportunity to attend a Catholic school of their choice. Filewych believes that additional funds should be allocated for support and resources in classrooms.
