Local group promotes chastity video

WESTERN CATHOLIC REPORTER EDMONTON — Jane Burnside says she saw Pam Stenzel's pro-chastity video and now she's under an obligation to make sure others see it too. "As soon as I saw it, I said, 'This is amazing,'" Burnside told the WCR. So she tried to buy a copy of Stenzel's no-nonsense talk to a Church youth group. Several months and $48 later, she finally got her hands on one. "It was quite an ordeal and it was very expensive." So she and her friends in The Chain that Binds Rosary Society worked on becoming the Canadian distributor for Stenzel's videos. They eventually got the master tape and the rights to sell the video in Canada - which they do for no profit at $29 apiece. "So many kids seemed to be getting into tremendous difficulty - both physically and spiritually - we thought we should just try (to sell it)." So far, they've sold about 300 copies across the country to individuals, schools and churches. In the 58-minute video, Sex Has a Price Tag, Stenzel spells out in no uncertain terms the disadvantages of being sexually active before marriage - pregnancy, abortion, poverty and, above all, sexually-transmitted diseases. And she gives a positive message of chastity: Remain a virgin until marriage and your spouse will receive a great gift and will always be able to trust you. Stenzel, who spoke at the Alberta Catholic education conference 2000 in Calgary, has an approach to which youth pay attention, says Burnside. Her own children, now aged 17 to 25, were reluctant to watch it at first. But one day, she left the video running when she went to answer the phone. One child came in and sat down. Soon others were watching. "It was such a powerful message in the way Pam spoke. The kids seemed to listen to it." Sex Has a Price Tag is available from the rosary society at 435-6996 or 1-877-299-0979. |
